Cable load cells measure the tensile force in tensioned cables by measuring the local deformation in the clamping area. The integrated full-bridge strain gauge records the force transmission perpendicular to the cable axis and generates a signal that can be analysed.
They are used when loads or tensile forces need to be monitored directly on the rope. Typical applications include crane and lifting technology, as well as conveyor and lift technology. The signals can be used for overload monitoring and to detect a load-free drop (slack rope protection).
The sensor is secured to the cable using a central clamp. Two pulleys guide the cable loosely, ensuring that the force is transmitted in a controlled manner. Installation does not require any modification to the cable design.
The DMS full-bridge is housed in a sealed measuring chamber filled with a highly elastic encapsulant. This reliably protects the measuring points from mechanical and chemical influences.
Cable sensors are designed for connection to signal conditioning amplifiers. The shield of the connecting cable is not structurally connected to the surface of the sensor, in order to ensure interference-free signal transmission.
The sensor’s nominal output can be checked using a calibration test signal. This allows the operation of the entire measurement chain to be checked without applying any mechanical load.
